Gears Of War never scrimps on the battlefront when it comes to this and, unlike the problems that Gears 2 faced on its launch, the third outing doesn’t suffer at all – multiplayer is already a fluid, eloquently paced joy ushering in fan favourites like Versus and revamped Horde mode (Horde 2.0 which utilises in-game currency to buy fortifications) and a new member to the club.

With some new weaponry and executions to play with, including using an enemy as a shield then shoving a grenade on his person before throwing him away, there’s always some grin-worthy tweaks to encounter.įor the first couple of chapters, though, you’ll be wary that this is just the same old same old. And all the usual hallmarks of the series are here – huge burly guys ducking and shooting round corners, diving around, grotesque enemy bosses, scavenging weapons and ammo and, most importantly, smoothly executing alien shits at will. Marcus Fenix’s oddly camp bandana and soul-patch combo has been sorely missed. As civilisation lies in ruins, you take over the roles of the legendary Delta Squad to fight for humanity’s survival against the Locust and Lambent alien mother-effers. Gears 3’s usual third-person shooter campaign is a solid one, with an engaging and touching story that ties up all the loose ends and is a thrilling epilogue to a tale that’s grown up alongside the Xbox 360 itself. The single player is well-trodden path that outdoes itself in terms of polish, and overall slickness, but sticks close to the wall with regards to new stuff. In fact, Gears Of War 3 is, at points, playing it too safe. And fans will be pleased to know Epic Games don’t do a Back To The Future 3 and spoil the whole thing. Strap on your Retro Lancer and lunge head-first into the action-swelled world of Gears Of War.
